When I began writing this book, I never imagined Roe would be undone so quickly.

No Choice was originally slated for release in January 2023 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But when it became clear that the Supreme Court intended to overturn that ruling, the PublicAffairs team and I agreed to fast-track the book for October 2022.

How did we get here? What does it mean going forward?

No Choice is about context, featuring the history of the fight for reproductive autonomy and scenes from the front lines. I interviewed women who sought abortion care before Roe, and those who have struggled to access it in recent years as abortion rights disintegrated in much of the Southeast. I also sifted through archives and spoke to providers, clinic escorts, legal experts, and protesters.

Reviews

“You could call the publication of No Choice, just three months after the overturning of Roe vs Wade in the US, a piece of lucky scheduling. Or you could see it as vindication: Becca Andrews was right not to dismiss the mounting threats against the constitutional right to abortion as scaremongering. No Choice began as a cover story for the American magazine Mother Jones… Most chillingly, her accounts of underground abortion services before Roe vs Wade in 1973 – provided by groups such as the Army of Three and the Jane Collective – now seem an indication of what is to come.”

“Andrews argues convincingly that the battle over abortion is part of a larger “war on women.” To demonstrate this, she spent three years talking to individuals who sought abortions. The three-part narrative she constructs from these interviews, which she interweaves with discussions of reproductive rights history, is profoundly sobering… Necessary in its racial and gender inclusivity, this thoughtful book will appeal to anyone looking to understand the way forward in a post-Roe world. An important book on a timely topic.”

“Reporter Andrews debuts with a brisk yet comprehensive history of the fight over abortion care and access in the U.S. since the mid–20th century… Throughout, Andrews skillfully illuminates the implications of changing laws and policies through individual profiles, and offers nuanced critiques of the ‘political rhetoric’ used by both sides of the debate. This is a valuable introduction to the current state of abortion rights in America.”
